eblacks Blog: Mason wins Gold!

Mason has once again done it and Come out on top, winning Gold for his nation for the second year in a row, a first for New Zealand and a feat that we are all proud of him for. Masons last match up was intense, Singapore picked "Hot for teacher" as his choice of song and at the last moment pulled out the win for that first song. Mason then came back at him with "Scream, Aim, Fire", Mason's favourite song scoring a win on the second song. So it came down to the tie breaker song, "". The last song was so intense, the whole crowd was holding their breath with mason pulling out a better strategic Star Power placement than his rival, securing Gold in The Asian Championship.

eblacks Blog: The Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony for the World Cyber Games was held tonight and proved to be a spectacular event to say the least. The event started off with the preshow event which included an impressive performance from German rock band H-Blockx, while BMX bikers did various stunts on the purpose built halfpipe set slightly behind the main stage, following their performance the main ceremony began. The ceremony highlighted the WCG spirit of competition, the ideas of fairplay that bind the WCG into the worldwide event. The event incorperated opening speeches from both the president of Samsung and the mayor of Cologne who both helped to get the games underway. A procession of nations flags gave each country competing here at the WCG time to make their pressence felt. BOth the flag of the WCG and of the host nation Germany were raised as well as a symbolic passing of the WCG virtual torch which went from nation to nation over the past year in the road to the WCG. we were also treated to an opera rendition of the World Cyber Games hymn. Following the close to the ceremony the eblacks headed back to the village to get some rest before tomorrows start to the competition. On day 1 of the WCG we have both Mason "Massi4h" Maddox playing his pool play of Guitar Hero and our Counterstrike squad play in their pool as well both teams looking for a place in the final elimination part of the tournament.

eblacks Blog: Practice makes Perfect

Today has become the day of practice for the eblacks today with everyone bunkering down in various locations around the city to get in some long, hard hours of practice for the coming tournament. Byron and the Counterstrike team have headed over to the ESL headquarters here in Cologne to practice using their facilities which include a ping sitting at around the 3 mark which is fantastic for the crew to practice at LAN speeds against some of the european teams. Wugga has joined Tetra, the singaporean representative for Virtua Fighter in his room for some sparring today to keep his game warm. Meanwhile Kowi and Massi4h have holed up in the New Zealand headquarters here accross the city in order to get some serious practice in. Kowi is practicing up some new strats to keep his opponants off gaurd while Massi4h practices his starpower timing and keeping his note streak up. The Halo team is sitting down with their australian counterparts to run some strats seeing as they are differant pools for the first part of the compitition. Connagh has not joined his team making the strats as he has been chosen for the honor of carrying the New Zealand flag at tonights opening ceremony. More updates on the opening ceremony tonight.

eblacks Blog: The Welcome Party

The team just got back from the welcome party for all the players that have now arrived in Cologne for the grand final. The party itself was held on a cruise ship as it sailed down the river and back up again to port. During the journey we sat down to a buffet meal and some light snacks while we were offically welcomed to the WCG 2008, a few promotional videos were shown for the city of Cologne highlighting the city’s features and instructional speeches were made about what was to happen over the coming days. The eblacks then spread out to catch up with friends and foes from previous years of WCG grand finals while those new to the WCG made new friends and chatted about the upcoming tournaments. Wugga spent the night convincing people that he was indeed himself just now with beard as many didn’t recognise him in his new incarnation. Following the close of the party everybody disembarked and headed back to the village to relax. So ends day two of the WCG, tomorrow is the opening ceremony which will beign the games proper.

eblacks Blog: Sightseeing and Shopping

We met up with some of the players to do some sightseeing in the center of Cologne, the first stop was the Dom; it’s a huge cathedral in the center of Cologne that looks absolutely amazing. We then went through the retail area of town doing heaps of window shopping however we spent a while at the Lego store, mason found a gladiator helmet he is considering wearing during his stage match with Germany.

A big surprise today was that Wugga might have got his first member of his fan club; the ice cream man actually was a big fan of virtual fighter and was quite proud to have met him.

That’s all for this update, just going to get ready for the welcome party and will do an update later tonight about that.

eblacks Blog: The Players Village

We arrived at the players village in the early evening, eventually finding our way here by way of giant posters, google earth on tmdudes blackberry and cryptic comments from random strangers. The village itself is housed within one of Colognes premier Youth hostel facility which has the perfect blend of relaxation facilities and sleeping quarters for all players to lay their head down for the night. At the moment the place is still relatively quiet with New Zealand being one of the first teams to arrive accompanied only by the German national team and a few of our old friends and rivals from the Asian Championship. We will show you round more of the village tomorrow but for now let me leave you with this image of the village in the setting sun.

eblacks Blog: Arrival in Germany

eblacks arrive in Germany the eblacks have made it all in one piece and touched down in Dusseldorf international airport. What has ensued however is a tale worth telling. Once we had touched down on the ground in Dusseldorf, we collected our baggage and began to test our German on the unsuspecting populace in an effort to get directions to the WCG players village. Our first train ride got us to the train station in Dusseldorf not too long after we were headed by train to Cologne, as the German countryside rolled by, everyone took the time to drink it in while Zeth decided to practice up his dance moves perhaps in an effort to win over the few locals on the train who remained in our section. His attempts were fruitless. Further down the line we disembarked at what we thought was the right connector station to the underground, we were incorrect. A few minutes later we were back on the rail one stop over to cross the River and arrive at the underground terminal. Thanks to the help of some locals the team managed to find the right underground train to take us to the village but not before Wugga once again caused a disturbance in the locals or rather  his beard did. The mans beard had attracted a few stray looks here and there, clearly admiring its full and uniquely Hamilton nature but one German citizen seemed engrossed even more so by the wugbeard. While sitting at the underground station waiting for the number 18 train this one gentleman arrives on the station floor and makes a beeline straight for Wugga disregarding all in his path, he then gave Austin a very intense expression that the team decided could only mean he needed a shave.  Wugga was not the slightest bit concerned.

The team waits for the next train

eblacks Blog: The Journey Continues

24 hours into the journey, the eblacks have settled back into yet another aircraft for the final flight leg from Dubai to Dusseldorf before heading to Cologne, their final destination. Day has dawned local time in Dubai and spirits are high once again after a few hours downtime in Dubai airport to chill outside of an aircraft. Now everyone is settling in for the journey ahead with Wugga and his mighty beard taking on Kowi in some epic Tic Tac Toe matches, complaining about how the game has a load time for the help screen. Simcore is engrossed in his blackjack match while the others try to figure out how to play a movie, so far to no tangible success. The plane food continues to sit well in the teams opinion, Zeth especially seems to be quite taken by the idea that food gets delivered to your seat like clockwork, also by making small videos of himself pretending there is an increasing amount of turbulence, I have attributed it to cabin fever. At the end of this leg of the journey by air we will continue by train to our final destination.

eblacks Blog: eblacks are in the air!

This post is a little late due the the some of the Counterstrike team booking their shuttle bus for the wrong day and making us a little late.

We have just arrived at our first stop in Brisbane only been a few hours of travel so most of us are looking quite fresh at the moment.

Not sure when i will post an update but I am guessing the hour in Dubai will give me a chance.

eblacks Blog: Results - Rise of Massi4h

This morning at the Asian Championship massi4h has made a huge dent in all that have faced him in a series of matches that can only be discribed as seat of your pants stuff. His first match vs india was over in seconds as the Indian player was so terrifid of Mason that he refused to show up, leaving Mason to handle more worthy opponants. The first of which was Chinese T, which proved to be a very close match however Massi4h managed to pull trough and claim victory to the roaring shouts of the other eblacks. The final Match vs Korea was the closest with the Korean player taking out the second song by senses fail and mason gaining the lead in Knights of Cydonia and Raining Blood by Slayer. A Fantastic result from Massi4h and we all look forward to seeing more of him tomorrow as he ventures out of pool play and into the big leagues.

Pj had a rough lineup this morning with both of his matches in FIFA being some of the best in the world. PJ went up against the best in the world and did admirably. his first match against the Phillipines was a tense battle of skill which in which the Phillipines player eventually got the upper hand and bested PJ wit ha score of 5 - 4. An incredibly tense match to watch. Following that he faced the hardest opposition in the competition in the form of China and did well making the Chinese player work for every point with a final score of 7 - 0. That means that sadly PJ has been knocked out of the competition but leaves having built a great deal of respect for himself and New Zealand.

Its Friday morning and the Asian Champs is now right on our doorsteps. The 9am bus ride to the Suntec Plaza the venue for the WCG Asian Championship means its an early rise for our intrepid team of Gamers. After a harsh rise and shine delivered by me at 8am the Gamers slowly rose and began to prepare for the first day of the event. We all picked up our gear and moved to the foodcourt located right next to the players village. Some of us grabed the local food while others went for McDonalds and Ice Milos, a must for anyone visiting Singapore. The Bus ride took us through some of the Singapore CityScape to the doorstep of the rather impressive venue for this weekends event. Following the Team registration to make sure that everyone has shirts and tags for the event. more to follow later today on the happinings here in Singapore.

eblacks Blog: The Team Arrives In Singapore

After 10 gruelling hours of flying with screaming babies and a limited range of entertainment options, we have arrived in Singapore, home of this years Asian championship. After the initial heatwave upon leaving the airport we were taken to our hotel to settle in and transform our area into the New Zealand HQ for the event. Complete with flags to complete the patriotic look. After a team briefing outlining how the event was set out everyone went their seperate ways to explore the surrounding area. The DOTA boys went and caught up with the australian team, their old rivals and chilled for the night with some of the other DOTA teams. The Costa Sands resort which serves as the players village is an interesting place at the moment teams from various nations all wandering around the place, checking out this and that, chatting with other teams, old friends and trying to avoid the torential downpour that welcomed us to the country. Wugga has settled in for some hard Virtua Fighter practice with Massi4h while the others have gone to explore our surroundings and see that they can find. Its all a very surreal experiance. Patrick and PJ have both went to find some food and settle into bed for what is going to prove to be an exciting day tomorrow.

NZ’s top video gamers take on Asia’s best

AUCKLAND 06 August 2008 – Nine of New Zealand’s top gamers are set to battle Asia’s best at the 2008 World Cyber Games Asian Championship in Singapore this weekend.

Elite gamers from 14 countries across Asia Pacific will compete at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre on 9-10 August.

The 2008 World Cyber Games (WCG) Asian Championship sees the top 140 gamers in the Asia Pacific region competing on video game titles such as Guitar Hero III (Xbox 360) and FIFA 2008 (PC).

World Cyber Games New Zealand Strategic Partner, xLAN’s Susan Baikie, says the NZ team, dubbed the eblacks, will be competing for a chance to win approximately US$15,000 in prize money.

Susan Baikie says the popularity of gaming increases every year. More than NZ$51.5 billion was spent on video games worldwide last year. In New Zealand last year more than NZ$100 million was spent, up 20 per cent over the past five years.

“The NZ World Cyber Games qualifiers in July showcased some of New Zealand’s best gamers and we’re looking forward to competing against the best gamers in Asia Pacific. The eblacks have been training non-stop for this world-class tournament and are more than ready to battle at the eSports equivalent to the Olympic Games.”

The eblacks will compete in a mix of console and PC games: Virtua Fighter 5 (Xbox 360), Guitar Hero III (Xbox 360), DOTA All-Stars (PC), Need for Speed: ProStreet (PC) and FIFA 2008 (PC). The team comprises nine members, most of which will be competing in Singapore for the first time:

More than 300 PCs, 40 Xbox 360s and more than 30 Samsung High-Definition LCD TVs will be spread over a combined floor space of 4,000 square metres over the two days of this ultimate gaming event.

With the support of sponsors Samsung, Intel and Microsoft Xbox 360 and supporting agencies Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) and Media Development Authority (MDA), this year's WCG Asian Championship promises to be an even bigger and better event than in previous years with more games, gamers and fans.
